Safety Tips

Being prepared is the key to staying safe during emergencies. Georgia Southern University encourages all students, faculty, and staff to plan ahead for all hazards — from severe weather to fires and medical emergencies.

Know Your Surroundings

  • Familiarize yourself with campus buildings, classrooms, and residence halls.
  • Identify the posted evacuation routes and locate at least two exits in every building you use regularly.
  • Stay informed about hazards that could impact the campus, such as fire, flooding, tornadoes, or hurricanes.
  • Talk with your Residential Advisor, professors, or work supervisors about specific emergency procedures.
  • Make a family emergency plan so everyone knows what to do if disaster strikes.

Identify Critical Services

  • Know where essential services are located, such as hospitals, pharmacies, and utility providers.
  • Save 24-hour contact numbers for your RA, landlord, power company, and roadside assistance.
  • Keep these numbers stored in your phone and on a printed wallet card for quick access.

Stay Informed

  • Download safety and weather apps to your smartphone.
  • Follow official university emergency alerts and local TV or radio stations.
  • Plan ahead for possible cellular service disruptions during severe weather.

Communication Planning

  • Decide how you will stay in touch with family and friends before, during, and after an emergency.
  • Keep a printed wallet card with key numbers in case your phone is unavailable.
  • Program emergency contacts in your phone using ICE (In Case of Emergency) labels (ICE1, ICE2, ICE3).

Build Your Emergency Kit

  • Keep an emergency supply kit in your car and residence.
  • Include first aid supplies, flashlights, extra batteries, food, water, medications, and important documents.
  • Consider extra items if you have children or pets.

Training & Safety Skills

  • Take a CPR and First Aid class to be ready to help others.
  • Stay familiar with university emergency plans and participate in drills when available.

Plan for Family & Pets

  • Review your children’s school or daycare emergency procedures.
  • Prepare supplies for pets, including ID tags, leashes, food, vaccination records, and crates.
  • Always evacuate with your pets — never leave them behind.
